The Arts

SCSD has a long history of focus on the arts and has extensive programs in instrumental music, choral music, visual arts, and drama.  A majority of our students take advantage of one or more of these programs, most of whom have no prior experience.  The focus on the arts is an integral part of our Whole Child approach by embracing the emotional, social, physical, cognitive, academic, and technical elements of discipline in the arts.  Our programs are also very much aligned with our Strategic Plan for Future Ready Learners, as these programs require an emphasis on the skills highlighted in our Learner Profile.

Arts and Music in Schools Plan and Report

On November 8, 2022, California voters approved Proposition 28: The Arts and Music in Schools (AMS) Funding Guarantee and Accountability Act. The measure required the state to establish a new, ongoing program supporting arts instruction in schools beginning in the 2023–24 school year.

The arts and education program instruction includes (but is not limited to) instruction and training, supplies, materials and arts educational partnership programs for instruction in dance, media arts, music, theater, and visual arts including folk art, painting, sculpture, photography, craft arts, creative expression including graphic arts and design, computer coding, animation, music composition, ensembles, script writing, costume design, film and video.

San Carlos School District’s whole child instruction model fully supports and aligns with the spirit of Proposition 28. Arts and Music Schools funding will be used to support the continued development of the whole child, by investing in programs related to music, computer coding and innovation, theater, creative expression including graphic arts and design, visual arts, and media arts, STEAM, from grades TK-8.

San Carlos School District Programming:

  • TK-3: Music, STEAM
  • 4-5: STEAM, Music, Theater
  • 6-8: Art, Music, Theater and STEAM

As a requirement for using Proposition 28 funds, a report containing the following information is linked below for each school year.
