TK Expansion Project Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
On May 28, 2026, the San Carlos School District held community information meetings at the three campuses included in the TK Expansion Project. The meetings provided an opportunity for families, staff, and community members to learn more about the proposed improvements and ask questions about the projects.
Below are frequently asked questions received during and after the meetings, organized by school site. This document will be updated as project planning, design, and construction progress.
Brittan Acres School
Q: Why are only two TK classrooms being built?
SCSD Answer: This project includes the TK classrooms currently funded under Measure H and identified in the phased Facilities Master Plan. Additional classroom expansion is planned for future phases of work.
Q: What is the plan for replacing the playground for older students?
SCSD Answer: The current project includes new play structures for ages 5–12 as well as a separate structure designed for ages 2–5.
Q: Is there a plan to further phase or stagger recess schedules?
SCSD Answer: Recess will continue on its current schedule.
Q: What changes are planned for the outdoor lunch area? Will there be a new space?
SCSD Answer: There are no planned changes to the outdoor lunch area.
Q: How will recess and PE be managed with reduced grass and blacktop areas during construction?
SCSD Answer: Site staff will coordinate supervision, scheduling, and use of outdoor spaces to ensure safe and structured recess and PE activities throughout construction.
Q: What noise and dust control measures will be in place during school hours?
SCSD Answer: The contractor will follow all required safety and environmental protocols, including noise and dust mitigation measures, to maintain a safe school environment.
Q: How will construction impacts be communicated to families throughout the project?
SCSD Answer: Updates will be shared through the Measure H project webpage, school newsletters, and principal communications as needed.
Q: When will the play structures be ready for use?
SCSD Answer: The current estimated completion date for the project is September 19, 2027.
Q: What play structures will be available for students during construction?
SCSD Answer: Brittan Acres currently has two play structures on the upper yard that will remain available during construction, including structures designed for ages 2–5 and ages 5–12. The existing PreK-TK yard on the upper yard will remain open, along with the play structure located near the portable classrooms.
Q: Are the lunch tables located within the construction zone?
SCSD Answer: Yes. Lunch operations have been moved indoors during the 2026–27 school year.
Q: Will construction activities create dust that could affect students or staff?
SCSD Answer: Construction activities are expected to have minimal impact on students and staff. The existing buildings are primarily wood-framed, and work will be performed in accordance with applicable safety requirements. Any demolition activities that could generate dust will be carefully managed, scheduled to minimize exposure to students, and monitored by the construction team. CORE Construction will implement appropriate dust-control measures as needed, including those identified in its Silica Exposure Control Plan Checklist, to help maintain a safe campus environment throughout construction.
Arundel School
Q: Where will the new buildings be located on campus?
SCSD Answer: The schematic design materials posted online show the proposed building locations. The new classrooms are planned for the lower yard area near San Carlos Avenue.

Q: Will all trees be removed from the site?
SCSD Answer: The design prioritizes preservation of existing trees. Approximately 27 live oak trees are expected to be preserved. Eight trees have been identified for potential removal; however, the District and design team are continuing to explore options to preserve as many of these trees as possible.
Q: Will the temporary portable classrooms be removed once construction is complete?
SCSD Answer: Yes. The temporary portable classrooms (five total) will be removed as soon as feasible following completion of construction. One leased portable classroom on the upper yard is scheduled for removal in August 2026.
