The SMARTE program is dedicated to enriching children's lives after school. We provide a fun, safe and welcoming place to spend time each day. Through daily homework help, physical activity, and STEAM enrichment, children enhance their academic performance and character development preparing them for future success. Programs are available to all Kindergarten-3rd grade students at all four elementary schools.
Program Options
The SMARTE Clubhouse will continue to offer three options for families - 5-days, 3-days or 2-days per week. Our program begins when your child gets out of school and walks over to the SMARTE classroom. Kindergarten students are escorted from their classrooms by our staff, and older children walk over in groups on their own.
We believe that children need a balance between structured activities (such as building a lego project with a group of classmates) and unstructured time, where they are free to choose their own activities and partners. Activities include arts and crafts, playing outdoors, doing homework or spending quiet time reading a book. Most school days are highly structured, and kids need some time, particularly in the afterschool hours, to unwind and make their own choices.
Snack Time
We provide a healthy afternoon snack each day that always includes fresh fruit or vegetables. In addition, we are always willing to work with any parent of a child who has a specific concern or food allergy. Due to a large number of children with peanut allergies, we do not serve peanut butter or any item that we know has peanuts in it.
Homework Club
We know getting homework done each day is a priority for many parents. To address this priority, we provide a Homework Club, available to any child who wants/needs to participate. After snack time each day, the Homework Club meets in a group together at quiet tables to do their homework. Homework Club is managed by one of our staff members, who are there to support children’s homework needs and make sure that they finish the majority of their homework when possible. Homework Club runs for approximately one hour and children are free to leave the area and join in on the other activities as soon as their homework is completed.
Coming Next Year - More Enrichment!
We are working with vendors to offer more enrichment as part of our program day. We are excited to bring in additional programming like STEAM, sports, music, and more.
Health & Safety Measures
We follow all San Mateo County health requirements including:
- Face coverings are required for all staff and students at all times
- Frequent handwashing and hand sanitizing
- Routine cleaning and disinfecting

SMARTE Hours of Operation
The SMARTE Afterschool Clubhouse is open from the end of the school day until 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Parents may pick up children from the program at any time. There is no additional charge to accommodate children for additional hours for early dismissal time on parent conference days and minimum days.
For Kindergarten Students
K-Play is one additional hour of care for early bird Kindergarteners from 1:30-2:30 pm. Parents can choose this option only or in addition to the regular SMARTE schedule - $200 per month. Most parents wait to register for K-Play until the school assigns their child to an early or late bird schedule.
We are excited to welcome your children to the SMARTE Clubhouse next year! Please let us know if you have any additional questions by emailing us at smarteinfo@scsdk8.org.
