The San Carlos School District is proud to announce that all six of its elementary schools have been selected to receive the 2023 California Distinguished School Award - Arroyo Upper Elementary, Arundel Elementary, Brittan Acres Elementary, Heather Elementary, Mariposa Upper Elementary and White Oaks Elementary. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced that more than 350 elementary schools across the state are being honored with the award.

“We are so proud of our elementary schools for receiving this honor. We know our collective commitment to educating the whole child and meeting each individual child’s academic and social-emotional needs is the right priority and can help meet our equity goals. Earning this distinction validates that commitment,” said Superintendent Frentress.

The program recognizes outstanding education programs and practices. Schools are awarded for closing the achievement gap and for achieving exceptional student performance. The award returned this year after state testing was suspended as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Secondary schools (middle and high school) will be eligible for the award next school year.

Board President Sarah Cassanego stated, “On behalf of the Board, I want to congratulate all of our outstanding elementary schools on being recognized as California Distinguished Schools. To be honored among the top 356 out of almost 6,000 elementary schools across the state is a true achievement. Thank you to our staff, students, families, and community for their hard work and dedication to helping every child in our district succeed.”
