Experienced Administrator Brings Deep Understanding of District,

a Team-Oriented Management Style,

and a Passion for District’s “Whole Child” Approach to Learning

On September 12, San Carlos School Board President Nicole Bergeron announced that the Board of Trustees has selected Assistant Superintendent Mary Jude Doerpinghaus to serve as Interim Superintendent, pending final approval of her contract at the September 14 board meeting.

“We are so pleased that we were able to tap into our talented pool of leaders in the district and appoint an internal candidate who will keep us moving forward with fulfilling the goals expressed in our Strategic Plan,” said Board President Nicole Bergeron. “Mary Jude’s passion for the students in our district is unsurpassed, and she will be able to help us continue to provide the innovative and engaged learning experience that is the basis of our emphasis on the whole child. Mary Jude understands and supports the philosophy embraced by our district that learning extends beyond reading, writing and math to include skills that help students succeed beyond school, such creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication and citizenship.”

Bergeron added that the board sought the input of district leaders and principals before deciding to appoint an internal candidate as Interim Superintendent.

“Our staff expressed the desire for a leader who understood our district’s goals and initiatives, and would be able to maintain the momentum we have built over the last few years,” said Bergeron. “Mary Jude is already a key leader on our strong team of collaborators, and she will provide continuity in the mission of fulfilling our community’s vision for its schools.”

Doerpinghaus has served as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services for SCSD since 2013, and earlier served as Director of Student and Educational Services, Director of Special Education Services and Coordinator of Special Education Services for SCSD. She joined the district in 2008. Prior to joining SCSD, she shared a principal position and served as a speech-language pathologist in the Palo Alto Unified School District. She spent the early years of her career working as a speech-language pathologist in Texas and Ohio. Read a Q&A with Ms. Doerpinghaus.

“I am honored that the board is entrusting me with the leadership of the district during this time of transition,” said Doerpinghaus. “I am enthusiastic about the vision set by our board, and I love seeing the joy and wonder on our students’ faces as they learn and discover in our classrooms. I am eager to get started and work with our outstanding team!”

The Board of Trustees will begin the search for a permanent superintendent after new board members are sworn in during December. Voters will choose three board members in November. A permanent superintendent is expected to be in place by the start of the 2018-19 school year.

“The transition in leadership offers an opportunity for the community to get engaged and provide input on the future direction of the district,” said Bergeron, who is not pursuing re-election to the board. “I encourage the community to follow district news, attend school board meetings and stay involved during this time of change in our district. The voice of our community, which supports our schools so strongly, is critical as we choose a leader for the next era of our schools.”

Effective July 1, 2018 - San Carlos School District Board of Trustees Selects Michelle Harmeier as Superintendent

Seasoned instructional leader brings decades of experience

as a teacher, principal, district administrator, and community builder

SAN CARLOS, CA, April 5, 2018 – San Carlos School Board President Eirene Chen announced tonight that the Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Michelle Harmeier, currently serving as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for the Anaheim Elementary School District, to serve as Superintendent, effective July 1.

The Board met earlier in a closed session to vote on the selection, and then approved the superintendent’s contract in the public board meeting that immediately followed the closed session. The decision tonight followed several earlier meetings where the Board considered a wide range of information, including feedback from staff meetings at each of the district’s eight schools, as well as meetings with community members, parent leaders, teachers and district office staff. In addition, the Board reviewed results of 164 surveys submitted by staff and more than 500 surveys submitted by parents and community members. The Board conducted an extensive search over three months that attracted a pool of extraordinarily talented candidates for the position, including 24 current and assistant superintendents.

Dr. Harmeier is an exceptionally well-rounded leader who has passion for our vision and the ability to take our schools to the next level in implementing our strategic plan. Besides her deep experience as an instructional leader, she brings significant operational experience, including collaborating with colleagues to solve tough problems,” said Board President Chen.

Prior to serving as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for Anaheim Elementary School District, Dr. Harmeier served as Director of Human Resources for the San Mateo-Foster City School District. In addition to her most recent roles, Dr. Harmeier’s 25-year career in education includes six years as a classroom teacher, a middle school assistant principal, and 12 years as a site principal, with a balance of elementary and middle school leadership experience. Her wide array of experiences and accomplishments in these varied roles includes coaching and mentoring teachers and administrators, attracting and retaining highly-effective teachers and district staff, and raising student achievement for all learners. She is known for her ability to listen to all perspectives and collaborate, and for her strong support of colleagues.

“I am honored to bring my experience and excitement to the San Carlos School District, which is known as a progressive, innovative and high-achieving school district,” said Dr. Harmeier. “My educational and personal values are aligned with the District’s forward-thinking Strategic Plan that focuses on educating the whole child, preparing students for success in the 21st Century, and developing responsible citizens and leaders. I look forward to working with the district’s engaged School Board and highly-involved parent community!”

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Harmeier to San Carlos, and also want to thank our Interim Superintendent, Mary Jude Doerpinghaus, and our entire district leadership team and dedicated teachers and staff for their steadfast focus on our students,” said Board President Chen. “The professionalism exhibited by our high caliber staff is the reason that we were able to attract top-notch candidates.”

The Board invites the San Carlos community to meet and welcome Dr. Harmeier at a reception in her honor to be held in the Heather School MUR on April 23rd at 7 pm.

“I am looking forward to working with the San Carlos School District to continue the good work already in progress, build relationships with district leaders, teachers and staff, and provide the necessary leadership as we move forward,” said Dr. Harmeier.
