Dear San Carlos Community,

Last night Dr. Michelle Harmeier announced her retirement after 28 years in public education. Dr. Harmeier’s tenure with the San Carlos School District is highlighted by her dedication to student success, stabilization of our budget and enterprise programs, opening the Mariposa school, and building strong community ties through her participation in Rotary and other civic groups in San Carlos. Dr. Harmeier devoted herself to the San Carlos community and performed her job with positivity, dedication, and fearlessness. As a result of her work, the San Carlos School District is in a better place than before. The San Carlos School Board would like to thank Dr. Harmeier for her tireless work and dedication to the students, families, and staff of the San Carlos School District. After a long and successful career, her retirement is well deserved.

While we are sad to see her go, we are grateful that she provided the Board with ample notice so we can prepare for a successful transition to a new Superintendent in the fall. Dr. Harmeier will remain as Superintendent through June and will continue leading the San Carlos School District, including continuing to work on returning students to campus.

The Board will provide more information about the transition process as it is developed in the coming days and weeks. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Board with any thoughts or questions, you may email us at

San Carlos Schools have always been strong because of the support of our community, and the dedication of our talented staff. We look forward to finding a new Superintendent who can continue in that tradition.
